Eat yer Greens

Eat yer greens (and reds, and purples, and yellows… you get the drift)

Vitamins, minerals, Anti oxidants…

All buzz words that mean nothing? It may mean nothing but these little gems are really worth making sure you’re getting in your diet. (diet = food and drink regularly consumed - I am not referring to a restrictive 'diet')

Vitamin A & E are powerful antioxidants for example, and these help protect your cells from free radicals (pesky things that cause damage) and ageing. Between these 2 they contribute to cell renewal and repair, reduce the effects of skin ageing and the risk of cancer.

There are a huge range of vitamins and minerals in fruit and veg (as well as meats but we’ll keep this one plant based) and if you’re not including a nice dose of fruit and veg in your daily intake you’re missing out on some serious goodness!

Here are some wee ideas to get more of these vitamins, minerals and antioxidants into your diet without sitting with a pile of steamed kale being unhappy

Breakfast – add some fruit into your breakfast! Yoghurt and berries, a fruit smoothie, a pile of mango at the side of your toast or on top of your porridge or cereal

Even grabbing a fruit pot on the run helps, most places do wee fruit pots you can pick up if in a hurry

Snacks –

Again, fruit is easy to snack on – comes with its own wrapper most of the time (apples, bananas, oranges) or again you can pick up some in a hurry at a shop.

Chopped carrots or celery with a dip like hummus or tzatziki, or just on their own

Lunch and dinner -

Get the veg in on the side!! It’s easy to get prepackaged stuff nowadays, bags of salad for example. Or even frozen bags you stick in the microwave! Quick and easy, a nutrient dense addition for very little calories, all the veg adds bulk to your food which helps fill you up! As well as giving you a lovely dose of fibre…

Dessert –

Add the berries or just have the berries! With a wee bit of dark chocolate, berries and yoghurt is a decadent combo – and frozen berries are great on a hot pudding! Or in anything to be honest!

So there are some ideas for you – try and think of ‘eating the rainbow’ – the more colours you get in, the bigger range of goodness you’re getting in.

Let me know how you get on with those and hit me up with your ideas!
