Fat gets a hard time...

'Good' Fat in Diet: Why It's Important and What to Eat

Fat has long been demonised as the enemy of a healthy diet, (though to be fair, what hasn't?) but not all fats are created equal.

Some fats are essential for overall health and well being. These 'good' fats, also known as unsaturated fats, can help to lower cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation, and even improve brain function. Here's what you need to know about good fats in your diet.

What Are Good Fats?

There are two types of good fats: monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. Monounsaturated fats are found in foods like olive oil, avocados (once again, avocados are not sinful!), and nuts, while polyunsaturated fats are found in fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, as well as nuts and seeds.

Why Are these Fats Important?

These fats are important for loads of reasons! Without going into the science... they can help to lower bad cholesterol levels, which can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. They can also help to reduce inflammation in the body, which is linked to a host of chronic conditions like arthritis and diabetes. In addition, good fats are important for brain function, as the brain is made up of about 60% fat and requires a steady supply of healthy fats to function properly. Good fats also help your body absorb the vitamins and minerals from your other foods.

What Foods Should You Eat?

If you're looking to incorporate more good fats into your diet, there are plenty of options to choose from. Here are some foods to scran:

  • Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines

  • Nuts like almonds, walnuts, cashews, brazils, almonds

  • Seeds like chia, flax, sunflower, pumpkin (see the health food aisle in Aldi for loads of cheaper packs of the nuts and seeds)

  • Avocado (not sinful)

  • Olive oil

  • Dark chocolate (in moderation - also good for altering mood at certain times of the month!)

While good fats are an important part of a healthy diet, they are still high in calories, so it's important to consume them in moderation - like just don't go mental on them. Aim for a healthy balance of good fats, lean protein, and complex carbohydrates to make the most of your overall health and well being.

There's no need to snack on nuts and seeds like a squirrel. These things can be added into your cereals, yoghurts, porridge, salads and desserts. There are so many options.

A summary - Good fats are an essential part of a healthy diet. Incorporating more monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats into your diet can help to lower cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation, and improve brain function. By adding the right foods to your diet, you can enjoy the benefits of good fats while still maintaining a healthy weight and overall lifestyle.

Hope this has been of use and 'interesting'... share with someone you think may benefit!
